Physical Activity



Physical activity is the key. We can not expect for the weight or measurement to drop off and stay off if we continue to remain inactive. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. We need to change our lifestyles!!

Cordless phones, remote controls and escalators are amongst the many items that have contributed to our sedentary lifestyles.

Although physical activity helps you to stay healthy, a small number of people are unable to exercise due to illness or past injury. Everyone has a different level of fitness and exercising at a pace that is right for you is important.

Remember, physical activity should not cause you pain, and it does not have to cost you anything.

There are many different ways you can get active and finding a way that suits you is important. Many doctors will recommend 30 minutes of exercise a day, but the good news is this does not have to done all at once. You may choose to get off the bus one stop earlier and have a 10 minute walk home. You may also choose to walk down to the local cafe to purchase lunch, which may add another 15 minutes to your exercise for the day. Finally if you vacuum the lounge room when you get home you have completed your physical activity routine for the day.

Try not to do too much too quickly. Remember to think big but start small. Begin with something simple like a walk at lunchtime. Remember that you do not have to push yourself to the limit – some physical activity is better than no activity. If you have not done any exercise for a while, ensure that you consult your doctor first.

Ways to make exercise more enjoyable:

• Exercise with a friend – This can help you stay motivated whilst also making your exercise routine more fun and sociable.

• Try to make exercise part of your routine – Sometimes with our busy lifestyles we miss out on being active. Setting a time to exercise may be helpful.

• Try to make it fun – Exercise should not be a chore and choosing something you enjoy may make exercise fun. Playing a team sport can also mean you meet new people whilst also being active.
